The Job Shadow program will provide an opportunity for Yukoners looking to increase their skills and experience in either a below- or above-the-line position. This program is focused on higher level positions including the development of Yukon Keys. Therefore, applicants should have previous experience in the department where they are applying
Under this program SPYA will:
- Provide up to 75% of travel costs and a stipend (subject to demand and the program maximum) for up to five Yukoners who have arranged Outside job shadow positions.
- In conjunction with interested Yukoners, reach out to national organizations and other contacts to identify and/or facilitate potential job shadow opportunities.
To ensure this cohort provides the deepest level of professional development, we are looking for above- and below-the-line filmmakers who meet the following criteria:
- Experience Baseline: as this program is focused on developing Keys in the Yukon, you must have at least 2 years of active experience within your chosen filmmaking specialization accumulated over the last 5 years.
- Securing the Opportunity: You are responsible for finding, pitching, and securing your own one-week job shadow opportunity. While SPYA will do its absolute best to support you in your hunt—by offering guidance, reviewing your approach, and tapping into our network where possible—we do not directly match or place applicants.
- Scope of the Shadow: This application is open to both above-the-line and below-the-line filmmakers.
- Strictly Observation-Based: A job shadow is a short-term, unpaid professional orientation. You are there to watch, absorb, and learn—not to perform manual labour, complete tasks, or act as an active crew member.
- Defined Goals: Before filling out the form, ensure you can clearly articulate what you want to gain from the experience. The application will require you to outline your specific learning objectives and what you hope to observe during your week.
- Industry Etiquette: Keep in mind that securing a shadow position requires a high level of professionalism. You should treat your outreach and application with the same care as a standard job application, ensuring you respect the production’s time, confidentiality, and set boundaries.
- Willingness to provide feedback: You are willing to complete a participant survey at the end of the program.
