Stage Lighting Workshop

Led by instructor Nicolas Filteau, this workshop aims to provide junior lighting technicians and other interested individuals with foundational knowledge and practical skills in stage lighting. Participants will gain an understanding of lighting theory and receive hands-on experience with lighting equipment.

This workshop takes place over two days:

Wednesday, October 1 from 11am to 5pm

  1. Theory Session (6 hours):
  • Introduction to stage lighting concepts (e.g., color theory, light properties, instrument types)
  • Understanding DMX
  • Lighting console operation basics
  • Fixture patching and addressing
  • Safety procedures for lighting equipment
  • Design principles and basic lighting plots

Thursday, October 2 from 9am to 5pm

  1. Hands-On Training (8 hours):
  • Practical setup and rigging of various lighting fixtures
  • Connecting and configuring DMX/sAcn
  • Operating a lighting console for basic programming and playback
  • Troubleshooting common lighting issues
  • Opportunity for participants to apply learned concepts in a practical setting.
  1. Shadowing Opportunity (Optional – up to 2 hours):
  • Participants may have the opportunity to shadow during the Major Funk Disco Show production, observing real-world application of lighting design and operation. This will be subject to the discretion of the instructor.

This workshop is $200 per person. SPYA and Music Yukon members will receive a 40% discount.

Instructor: Nicolas Filteau
Nicolas, founder of NF Electrical and Event Production Ltd., began his electrifying journey in 2009 as an audiovisual technician at the Yukon Arts Centre. It was there he first honed his skills and ignited his passion for crafting exceptional visual experiences. Over the years, Nicolas’s talent led him to work with a diverse array of productions, eventually taking his expertise global with iconic companies like Cirque du Soleil, Solotech, and Machine de Cirque. These invaluable experiences refined his expertise in both lighting design and technical production, giving him a comprehensive understanding of the live event landscape. After touring around the world for years, Nick took the step of incorporating NF Electrical and Event Production Ltd., allowing him to further share his unique vision and creativity. Since then, his company has successfully brought numerous exciting projects to life, specializing in lighting design, event production, and venue upgrades.
