Assistant Directing Workshop

Film productions are a collaboration of different departments working toward the same goal of making a movie. In order to have a successful shoot, all cast and crew need to be given an effective plan for the work. Developing and supervising a good pre-production and production plan in film is the job of an assistant director, and it is vital to the success of a production.

Workshop participants will learn to prepare a film shoot by learning how to break down a script, schedule a shoot and run the set like an assistant director, following industry standards. By understanding film set protocols and safety concerns, participants will learn to keep the crew moving forward by being the communication hub as well as understanding how to work with the cast.

By the end of the workshop, participants will have a working knowledge all of the steps necessary to prep a film for production and have had practice running a set as a first assistant director.

Class Objectives:
1. Provide students with knowledge of set protocols
2. Enable students to effectively break down a script and create all necessary organizational documents such as a One Line Schedule, Shooting Schedule, Day out of Days and Call Sheets.
3. Understand the responsibilities of the 1st AD and the role they play in running the set.

This workshop runs over two days, September 20 & 21 from 10am to 5pm each day at the SPYA Studio.

Instructor: Ingo Lou

Since 2013, Ingo has produced ten feature films as well as the critically acclaimed, Leo
Award-winning television series, The Switch – Work. Love. Mortal Danger. He has additionally supported the creation of over 70 short films in mentorship and production roles, and a further 35 long and short form productions as an assistant director. Ingo presently serves as a faculty member at Capilano University’s School of Motion Picture Arts, where he teaches line producing and production management.
