Story Building for Documentary

From idea to pitch: In this professional development series, writer, producer and story consultant Dawn Brett-Hauschild provides the building blocks for filmmakers to transform their raw ideas into stories that connect with broadcasters and audiences alike.

Through Zoom discussions, writing exercises and one-on-one consultations, emerging and established writers, directors, and producers will learn how to quickly focus their ideas into original stories by using professional research, character development and story structure techniques.

Participants will leave with a better understanding of their strongest story elements, the tools to create a professional quality pitch, and a focus statement to help guide decisions through pre-production, production and post.

Event Details

  • Dates: Throughout the month of January (6 hrs with the instructor over the month, plus your own writing time in between sessions).
  • Cost: $200 Members/$300 Non Members

Dawn Brett-Hauschild is a writer/producer who specializes in documentary film, unscripted television and digital media. A senior story editor and freelance story consultant, Dawn works with international award-winning directors, leading Canadian production companies and emerging artists to create compelling narratives grounded in quality research, character development and story structure.
